Why Do People Give the Silent Treatment? – Vol. 516, June 3, 2021

Why Do People Give the Silent Treatment? – Vol. 516, June 3, 2021

There are really three reasons for someone to give another the silent treatment so it depends on the circumstances.

The first is if the person giving the silent treatment is enacting a ‘no contact’ procedure where the person that is being silenced is understood as being toxic as in an abusive relationship. Interactions with this person is setting off negative emotions with the comments or thoughts aimed at the person who is choosing to no longer connect with the person. This is certainly a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Understand that it is the person who is ‘feeling’ the toxicity that has the right to do whatever that person feels is necessary to create a safe place for themselves.

The 2nd situation is when one is using it more for a manipulative action to create angst in the other person. In this case, one really has to decide if one wants to engage with a person who has the sort of mental illness that would bring this sort of behavior into being in the first place. Because, the reality is that if one is manipulating another to get a ‘reaction’ of some sort, one has to ask if this is that the sort of person one wants to spend their very limited emotional energy on?

The 3rd is when the person is needing space to deal with life. In that case, a warm text or voice mail could be left just stating the fact that you are concerned for the other person and hope that there wasn’t anything that you did that made the person want to distance themself from you. If that happened you would love to clear the air by finding out what you did and making sure it never happens again. However, you cannot make that happen without knowing what you did. And then give them a time frame to get back to you to clear the air.

The reality is that many times these things have nothing to do with the other person with whom the silent treatment is occurring. People with depressed moods will isolate as a part of the condition, people who are going through a tough time or a to them embarrassing time will not be as available as maybe they once were, and when people are going through a hard emotional time they will tend to take space as well to just have time to themselves to work through things.

So, it is a slippery road personalizing other’s actions because in the majority of cases it is about what is going on with the other person and has zero to do with us. Life is more challenging these days than normal and for that reason, many people are having a hard time coping. It would be healthier for them to reach out for help – some will and it may be another person or a professional to whom they are reaching. Again it has zero to do with anyone else – just them working through their own emotional situation for which it may be no else’s business anyway.

Learning: We need to be careful to not assume things that just are not so. On the other hand, we do want to be thoughtful with whom we associate and under what circumstances for our own mental health.

DeLabeling Those With So-Called Mental Health Issues – Vol. 515 – May 27, 2021

Today we are going to speak to the whole notion of ‘stigma and ‘labels’ as attached to those given psychiatric diagnoses (worse being diagnosed by those without the education to do so including self-diagnosis).

Coming from the perspective as a person who has been involved in the treatment of others with major mental illness since 1993 and having gone through my own healing journey with bipolar 2 (manic depression in the old days) I can diagnose a person probably as well as anyone who has been through med school to learn how to do so ….and I am here to tell you that the labels do much more harm than help for most of those who are so diagnosed.

First, there is a stigma attached to these labels. I don’t know if you realize this, but doctors who are going through depressive episodes who reach out for help, can have their licenses revoked in the United States, and then we wonder why 400 MDs commit suicide a year -add another 400 medical students and that is probably a very low number – we can start to understand why these labels can be so harmful even to those who are educated and trained to help those of us who have medical issues that need attention.

Second, there is this ‘superior’ feeling that those who have yet to be diagnosed diagnosing those in their lives. Given the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual 5th Revision has a diagnosis for every normal human emotion (makes it much easier to prescribe meds with a diagnosis rather than do the hard work of therapy to better understand and release the underlying issues) because, well that other person is a ____fill in the gap. Most often today people love to label others as narcissists. The only problem with that particular habit is that we humans are all on the continuum of narcissism as we all want the best for ourselves. Truthfully, if you believe in these labels less than 2% of the population would have what a true diagnosis of narcissism would be – so given that reality, you can stop using that label as you are doing so inappropriately.

Third, there is secondary gain to many of these diagnoses. Those with ADD/ADHD (even if only self-diagnosed) love to tell me how they are unable to do whatever because they cannot concentrate. However, the people with these issues have what is considered ‘hyper focus’ on those things that they want to do and simply ignore the rest. So, I challenge my clients to find a reason to do those other things that are most compelling and then use their natural ability to hyper-focus to get those things done.

For those with anxiety or depression, many times they take themselves out of situations that they feel overwhelmed by so don’t have to do many of the things they didn’t want to do anyway and get lots of sympathy for it.
For those who have serious mental health issues, social security disability income can be had, though to be honest, it is a very hard thing to accomplish – or it was back when I was involved in conventional mental health.

My point here is that I have found during the 19 years that I have been in practice that most people have created a negative behavior based on compulsive thoughts because of a trauma – or maybe many traumas over a lifetime. What this means is that the ‘cause’ of the problem’ – the event that caused the problem to develop needs to be uncovered. The ‘purpose for holding onto the problem needs to be understood and then ‘a compelling future’ that is much more alluring than being ill, needs to be found so that a person can return to health – this is in the case of emotional reasons for the symptoms because and this is a big “BECAUSE” NOT ALL seemingly psychological or psychiatric symptoms have a thing to do with emotional distress. Many have to do with the inability to metabolize the proteins from which the amino acids are found to make the neurotransmitters and the hormones necessary for us to feel emotionally stable and to think clearly. It needs to be added here that there are also issues when Vitamins and minerals are not being metabolized either so for example too little B12 can cause one to feel depressed, Vitamin D3 is necessary to feel emotionally and mentally stable as well as many others.

Hormonal imbalances come into this equation as well especially as our sex hormones decrease when we go through menopause for women and the similar situation with men when their testosterone levels go down later in their lives.
Many, many medications cause emotional dysregulation including SSRIs -serotonin reuptake inhibitors that are prescribed for – you guessed it – depression – so much so that they have a ‘black box’ on the label stating to be careful in giving to youth because they will get homicidal or suicidal. However, there are other classes of medications that can do the same thing so be forewarned.
And then there are brain injuries to the parts of the brain that have to do with emotional regulation and mental processing including strokes.

There are other issues that can come into play, however, I do believe that you are getting what I am saying here. Most mental illness is not necessarily something that needs a diagnosis – anorexia, bulimia, sex addiction, substance abuse, and substance addiction along with the personality disorders such as histrionic and borderline personality disorders need to be understood for what they are along with psychopaths and sociopaths – and this is by far a very tiny minority of human beings.
So, how about we come from the point of view that a person is having some problems with functioning and to help them to deal with that issue, we need to find the ‘cause,’ the ‘purpose,’ and a ‘compelling future’ that is so alluring to the person that they are so excited to finally be free of this label that they will do the deep inner work to let all this stuff go to have a quality of life more than worth living, and become de-labeled as they are back to emotional and physiological health!

Antonio’s Story – Vol. 514, May 20, 2021

My client Antonio, came to me when he was only 16-years-old and he has completely inspired me along with his parents!

That was back in 2005 when Antonio’s parents brought him to see me because the conventional mental health treatment that he was receiving was causing more harm to him than good. He was given several mental health diagnoses, and was on 6 different medications – none of which were needed, had anyone cared to ask Antonio why he was so angry.

It was especially challenging because of I was dealing with a kid whose adoptive parents truly loved, and yet the people who were working with him at the time had told him that he would be in jail or dead by his 18th birthday. The impact on him was devastating. And it was impacting the rest of his family as well.

The amazing thing about Antonio was that he truly wanted to be well. He spent 15 hours with me with his mom for two of the 5-hour sessions and his dad there for all 3 of them. We did them as quickly as we could to shift this situation to one of desperation to one of inspiration of which Antonio has become to anyone who has known his story.

Antonio had a huge shift after our 3 days together finally understanding that he did not need to be angry, that he didn’t have to have all these diagnoses, and shortly went off all the psychotropic medications. Within a few months, he was living at his family’s home again in an apartment that his dad built for him.

Antonio attributes this shift in his life to the fact that he was unconditionally loved and accepted and allowed to have the say, he needed to give the correct direction to his treatment. He was told that as long as he respected his parents time, my time and was able to tell me if he was upset by something I said or had any questions to please let me know so we could work through it as these came up.

He is now 30 years old, owns his own company, had great relationships with his family, and has a great relationship with a significant other.

He and his family still are talking about the great change all these years later that Antonio was able to make because he was finally heard and given the chance to heal the loss of his biological mom from AIDS when he was all of 6 months old.

Stop Worry About ALL Those Things That Cause Cancer: There Are 2 Things To Concern Yourself With According to Jason Fung, M.D. Vol. 513 – May 13, 2021

Today I am going to do a bit of education based on Dr. Jason Fung’s work because as far as I am concerned he is a doctor who ‘gets it’ – meaning what is causing most chronic illness and how to turn it around.

I first learned about Dr. Fung’s work as a nephrologist (a kidney specialist) when I was doing research into what causes so much damage to the bodies of those who develop type 2 diabetes. I was interested after losing my best friend from college from heart disease, he didn’t even know he had, secondary to his diagnosis about 5 years previous of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Fung wondered why so many of his kidney patients were going into kidney failure. He chased it all back to type 2 diabetes where the problem was hyperinsulinemia – meaning, too much insulin in the body. He went on to explain that each time a person eats, the insulin levels go up and that means that you are going to be getting fatter because insulin causes one to become fat. This also means that a person with type 2 diabetes never be given insulin, as their body has too much insulin already and that is the cause of much of the damage that is being done to their body in the first place.

Dr. Fung came to the conclusion that one needs to eat both less food and less often, making intermittent fasting a ‘thing.’ Now, think back on all the religions of the world and every single one has fasting as an aspect of their traditions. Think back to before farming and grocery stores and people went for long periods, sometimes days without eating because there were droughts at times, too much rain at other times, and of course insects that killed the crops throughout the ages. So, it has been set up in human beings to be able to store energy – which is done in our fat cells to be able to survive these environmental conditions.

Dr. Fung’s work has now gone into better understanding the cause of cancer and frankly, it is very simple – so one needn’t worry about every aspect of life as the ecofriendly people would like you to believe that everything on planet earth – mostly those that are man-made are the cause of cancer because the truth of the matter is that many of those items cause 2% or less of cancers – that’s right folks, relax a bit on worrying about all the causes of cancer except 2 of them, both of which you have complete control over should you choose to make these daily decisions for yourself.

1) Smoking causes 35% of all cancers so best you stop smoking in all its forms. If you are surrounded by those who smoke – best that you stop being around them as they are damaging their own body, because you can easily remove yourself from such situations.

If you do smoke, I can tell you as a hypnotist who specializes in smoking cessation – the addiction is emotional in 99% of cases having nothing to do with physiological addiction. I have had exactly 2 clients who were unable to stop smoking in the 19 years of my practice who I would say were physiologically addicted to the components in their cigarettes – 2 of hundreds over the years. So, for almost all of you, it is merely a decision to stop and then if necessary (which is only true in 5% of cases) hire yourself a hypnotist who in 1 session can help you to stop smoking for good – no drugs necessary, no long-term withdrawal symptoms – nothing at all – it is very simple and will save not only your life but a hell of a lot of money that you are putting into those cigarettes that cause 35% of all deaths by cancer.
Now, here is something that is even easier to understand and goes right back to Dr. Fung’s original research into why his kidney patients were needed dialysis so often and that has everything to do with the hyperinsulinemia – too much insulin being released into the body.

Diet is the cause of 32% of all cancers and has everything to do with not only the crap that is going into your frankenfood, but more importantly the fact that this food rarely satiates one, forcing one to eat ever more quantities. Each time you feed yourself, your insulin is going to go up and with that, the fat is going to be put on because high insulin in the body causes increases in fat. So here are two things that you can easily do should you choose to do them:

First, do intermittent fasting by cutting out breakfast and eating later in the day creating a fasting window of 12 hours to begin with, and then bring that to 8 hours of eating and 16 hours of fasting. If you figure 7-8 hours of sleep for the average person this is a very small amount of time before refeeding yourself. This is something that I do every day – skip my breakfast and eat when I start to feel hungry – a much different sensation than eating because you have been indoctrinated from the time of your youth to eat 3 meals a day and then adding in snacks in between. You can see how all these times for eating could be a detriment to your body now that you understand that high insulin levels is the main cause of obesity.
The second thing that one needs to understand about cancer is that it feeds on sugar, so best to stop eating so much sugar – which means understanding what all those fancy words for sugar are on any package of food – or better yet, to stop buying packaged foods because as we just went over, those packages of food will never satiate you and will have you eating ever more calories which will increase your insulin levels producing ever more fat.

What one needs to do is do what I am forever telling people to do – eat one item of foods combined to make other foods as your great-grandmothers did before the time of huge food corporations selling their poison as if it were actually food. It is not food as food nourishes the body, while the processed foods are seen as foreign by the body given all the additives and various chemicals put into them while all the nutrition that the body needs to replace the dead cells and make the various neurotransmitters, hormones, etc that the body needs to function appropriately are being removed by the processed food manufacturers.

If you have a bit of a sweet tooth as I do (though nowhere as bad as the sweet tooth of my youth, thank God!) use small amounts of honey, molasses, or maple sugar as they all have many other nutrients in them that will be helpful to your body instead of the empty calories of table sugar or the deadly components of fake sugar, which by the way cause people to eat even more food which is why many who are drinking sugar-free soft drinks are fatter than your average person.
Others tout stevia, however, I personally can’t stand the taste of it but if you are okay with it, it is fine for a sweetener.

Learning: Instead of fearing cancer take the action steps needed here which are very simple indeed. 1) get anything to do with smoking far away from you so that you are not inhaling the carcinogens for smoking represents 35% of all cancer. 2) Skip breakfast and eat 1 item whole foods that are in their original form. Combine them to make other foods as your great-grandma did before all the processed pre-packaged garbage that is called ‘food’ yet is void of the nutrients your body needs to function, came into being.
