While I was in a session with a younger client of mine, I had a discussion with his grandmother, a woman in her early 70’s. She was telling me how it was that she and her husband were spending so much time taking care of other people, that they didn’t have enough time to take care of themselves. 

This is a woman, who had originally wanted to employ my services to help her to deal with a problem that she felt was in her subconscious, that was creating anxiety for her. However, she chose to employ my services to help her grandson who was going through a very challenging time. 

The question that I had for her was, “Who is going to take care of you if you don’t take care of yourself?” She agreed that she needed to do better in that arena. 

I suggested that she put into use a word that we learn to use very well when we are 2 years old, which would be the word, “no,” For “people pleasers” such as this woman, saying ‘no’ to her family is a very hard thing to do, because she feels that she is there to help her family. The only problem is that her own health is getting worse as a result of not attending to her own needs. Further, she and her husband would rather be spending time during their retirement that has nothing to do with helping their kids or grandkids and just enjoying themselves.

 Again, I made it most clear in a very assertive manner, that the only person who could change her life was her. That, she had done her job raising her family, working for a living and needed the time to do as she wanted while in retirement. To fill one’s well, as John Gray, Ph.D. states in his book, “Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus,” is necessary to do, or anger and resentment will occur. It is also very important to be willing to take the sweet gestures that other give to us with a smile and appreciation because no one does this thing we call life, well all alone. We need people to love us and support us. To help us out when we aren’t feeling well or have challenges that need to be overcome. 

So, women, please learn from this example that it is quite alright, even necessary to be selfish enough to take care of yourself and do those things that make you happy, Because, the net result will be a healthier, happier you, making your presence all the more desired and appreciated by those in your life.

Kellner-Zinck is a Certified Trainer of Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic programing through Tad James Company, Inc. and a Master Hypnotist and Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming through Advanced Neuro Dynamics. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and political studies from Curry College.
