I have a philosophy that many people enter the field of mental health (and nurses are guilty as well) because they have a need to be needed. Because of this need to be needed, they will do whatever needs to be done to have their patients ‘like’ them. It is dysfunctional and co-dependent behavior and has a negative effect on the healing process.
Any time a prospect calls me for services I make it clear that I have no need for them to hire me, they need to have a strong enough desire to be healed because there most likely will be times when they will not like me very much as I will be holding them accountable. This is because they are unable to do this for themselves, or they wouldn’t need my help.
Real healing takes real work and the desire to overcome whatever the issues are that are causing the negative issues that brought the person into the practitioner for help in the first place.
Any therapist that can’t be honest and hold a client accountable is causing more harm than good in my estimation.
