Why Are Some People with Borderline Personality Disorder Unable to take Responsibility for their Actions?

This was a question that a person on Quora asked me to answer. It is one of those questions that deserve to be answered in an honest and realistic manner. So, here is how I answered it:

BPD people can be very intelligent, yet be at the emotional stage of growth of a young toddler when their personality disorder developed. As such they really have a hard time understanding what was wrong with many of their behaviors. Many can act quite infantile as a result.

Many have no recollection after doing horrific acts, and many can be most manipulative to get their needs met. It’s a difficult disorder to be around and even more difficult to have.

As the poster below mentioned, BPD people really do not know where they end and others begin. They are full of rage and feel very empty inside. So they do many things to fill that ‘hole in their soul’ to find that it was a very temporary fix indeed.

Their biggest fear is that of abandonment.

How do you deal with it? – As best as you can. Most people find it very difficult emotionally distressing and incapable of spending much time with them.

There isn’t really any great treatment for them so they do the best they can as we all do.

You need to have very clear boundaries with what behavior is acceptable and what is not – and yet, if they are in a particularly manipulative mindset, they will do something like tells you that if they don’t get their way they will commit suicide. These calls for help need to be heeded for what they are.

Thanks for the question – I am sure this answer has helped many others.

A great book that tells it from both the BPD’s perspective and the family and friends is: Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder
