What is the Difference Between the Conscious Mind & the Brain – Vol. 444, March 8, 2018
I received this question from a person on Quora, a forum for people from all over the world to ask and answer questions.
I loved this question, especially because the person who answered it before me suggested the old metaphor of the conscious mind being the “software” and the brain being the “hardware.” The only problem with that metaphor is that it is not true.
We now know based on the newer understanding of how the brain works through fMRIs, that the “conscious mind’ is the executive function of the brain, which happens in the prefrontal cortex of the brain – this is where all the reasoning, rationalization and judgments occur. When the brain waves are in “beta” they are accessing the conscious mind processing.
The “subconscious” or the “unconscious mind’ is accessed by placing a person into a hypnotic trance into either alpha or theta brain waves which are slower waves then the beta waves of normal conscious processing. These are the same brain waves one is in while in meditation. While in this altered state, there is no access to the executive function of the brain, allowing hypnotists such as me, to help our clients to easily reach the “unconscious” content that is holding them back in life, causing the damaging thoughts and behaviors that bring them to our practices, usually after conventional conscious therapy hasn’t worked for them. The information goes into the emotional part of the brain called the amygdala.
Understanding the intricacies of the mind and how it functions is not just about cognitive processes; it deeply influences an individual’s personality. The concept of the conscious and subconscious mind, as explored through methods like hypnotherapy, delves into the core of one’s personality traits and behaviors. Exploring the subconscious mind’s depths allows individuals to uncover the underlying factors shaping their personality, enabling profound self-discovery. Moreover, these revelations can often tie into specific personality type, shedding light on the deep-seated motivations and thought patterns that influence how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. By delving into the subconscious and intertwining this knowledge with personality type analyses, individuals can gain a comprehensive understanding of themselves, fostering personal growth and facilitating the development of healthier behaviors and attitudes.
It all happens in the brain and how the brain is functioning, so the old idea of hardware and software really doesn’t apply.
Here is an article on how our brains work along with how we learn based on information from Dr. Bruce Lipton’s book “Biology of Belief” – he is a cellular biologist with great humor – so I highly advise you to purchase his book.
