I came across a very well-written post by author Jeff Goin speaking about a problem that stresses out so many people in the US and other Western countries but is never really addressed.
What is that subject: Being overly booked with all the responsibilities parents in particular face. Their children are enrolled in many extracurricular activities. Some parents own their businesses and are also home-schooling their kids.
This manner of living is not helpful to anyone who is involved.
Yes, children need to have activities to learn basic ideas like engaging in activities they enjoy. This is only learned by trying out a lot of them best while young. They also learn to persist in achieving long-term goals to counter the impulsive tendencies all social media is based upon wrecking their brains’ ability to wait for an outcome. They learn to act as human beings who need socialization to grow up to be healthy adults.
However, humans also need downtime for rest and repair Constantly running around till one drops down into bed is a great means to bring on disease from the increased cortisol and adrenaline into the body that comes with this endless running around till exhaustion.
We humans need time for self-reflection to figure out what truly matters to us in life. Each of us with a different result if we just allow ourselves time to reflect each day. I prefer to do this in the morning with journaling. I get out all the crap that is stuck in my subconscious mind from the previous day and with that cleared out my subconscious mind allows me to figure out what I want to concentrate the largest effort on for the next few years.
For thousands of years, the Kabbalists have been teaching that our life is to serve others by filling their vessels with our talents, knowledge, and interests bringing others to a better place in the process. They call it ‘channeling God’s work’ which I believe is a beautiful way to practice spirituality. Other religions share this idea as I found out during a conversation with another professional on Alignable, though I forgot what religion she practices.
So, my questions to you today are simply this:
Are you ready to address this madness of compromising your health by running yourself into an early grave?
Are you willing to demonstrate some balance between being and doing for your children and others in your life?
I can promise you that if you do not, poor health be it physical with the development of cancer and/or autoimmune disease cropping up to stop you in your tracks, mental illness in the form of heightened anxiety often leading to depression, and/or depression.
After 30+ years as a practitioner in healthcare, I can promise you that this is the end that you can expect if you do not slow down and take time for rest and relaxation for your body’s renewal. I know that you all know this intellectually, and yet, you ignore it as your body and mind are screaming for you to just slow down…way down!
