How Do you Remind Yourself that Life Isn’t A Race?

race photoHow Do You Remind Yourself that Life Isn’t A race? – Vol. 445, March 15, 2018

This was another question that I received on Quora, a forum where people around the world ask questions and others answer their questions. The reason that I loved this question is that not, only did I have this feeling when I was in my 20’s, but have found so many of my younger clients feeling that they are never as far along in life as they feel they ought to be.

The problem with my clients never feeling that they are as far as they ought to be in life, is that they are putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on themselves, usually to keep up with their peers, who may not have had to deal with some of the issues my clients have.

The pressure that kids feel today is unwieldy. Many are feeling totally stressed out with the tests they have to pass to get into best universities, all the extracurricular activities they are told are required, also to get into the best universities, and some of them have jobs on top of it all, to be able to contribute to their educational cost.

I was listening to a webinar earlier today, where I heard these statistics regarding the high school students in the USA.

39% tired
29% stressed
26% bored.
22% happy.
7% excited

As the webinar leader commented, it is very sad to see so few of our teenaged kids excited about their futures.

These statistics came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

It so happens in the United Kingdom, 850,000 children are diagnosed with mental health problems and that number is rising.

Other statistics from the United Kingdom:

75% do not receive the support they need
50% of all mental illness starts by 14 years old and 75% by 24 years old
1 in 5 children age 0-10 experience mental disorder every year
10 years is the average delay between the onset of symptoms and intervention

The above statistics came from the National Institute of Mental Health

Believe it or not, when my young clients finally find their way to me with these feelings of not “measuring up,” many of them are depressed and full of anxiety for their future. These are not very helpful feelings to have, and certainly something that is worth helping them put in their past. This way we can get them into a situation where they can feel good about themselves and have a structured way to meet their goals, minus all the undue pressure.

So, here is what I answered that for that inquiry:

When I was in my 20’s I was constantly running around determined to figure out how to make money, going to real estate investor meetings, sometimes a hundred miles from where I lived. I was always learning about different business opportunities till one day I realized that none of that stuff mattered. What mattered was whether or not I was enjoying what I was doing with my time. Was it fulfilling?

I came to recognize the fact that a well-lived life was one where I can spend time with the people who inspire me, teach me about cool things, or spend time alone reading, writing, or taking seminars and workshops in areas of study that interests me.

It became obvious that the best way to enjoy life was to relish it. Relishing anything is being “present” and enjoying every second to the point where it feels as if time is slowing down.

When I learned Hypnosis and was in my favorite trainings a long way from home, I wanted them to last forever, being in my favorite environment with like-minded people, all there to grow as individuals and develop our skills in hypnotic work.

I go back to these wonderful times in my life in my mind, to relive the peace, contentment, and the happiness, which is a great reminder to let go of the stress of rushing and enjoying life’s journey.
