So What Exactly is Causing All That Pain You Are Feeling? Is it Physical or is it Emotional?

So What Exactly is Causing All That Pain You Are Feeling? Is it Physical or is it Emotional? – Vol. 234, Jan. 16, 2014

Over the past few months I have been working with some chronic pain sufferers. These young women have gone to every specialist they could think of to heal their hurting bodies and yet, nothing they tried came close to stopping the pain they were feeling.

I had just finished reading Dr. John E. Sarno’s book Divided Mind: The Epidemic of MindBody Disorders  when I received my first call for help with chronic pain relief. Dr. Sarno explains that chronic pain is created when anger and anxiety are not being addressed. He realized this when his patients were unable to get rid of their pain even after having surgery for the affected area based on his findings through MRIs, CTs and x-rays. Dr. Sarno has concluded that many of those images of damaged muscles, ligaments and even slipped disks in the back had zero to do with anything that would create real problems for most people, though can create a lovely income for surgeons. He came to this conclusion once he understood that the mind of a patient can be so strongly adverse to healing the emotional pain, that the body will take over with decreased oxygen to the muscles and ligaments causing the pain felt to patient. With that understanding as a baseline to work with lets move onto another surgeon’s take on what is happening with chronic pain patients.

Surgeon, Dr. David Hascom wrote an important article on this subject called “Am I Operating On Your Pain or Anxiety?” Here is what he said in his own words:

“My concept of pain has been turned upside down over the last year as I have seen a number of patients who had a tight compression of nerves in their lower back or neck with severe arm or leg pain. I have historically thought that I should be aggressive in surgically solving the problem and dealing with the structured spine care program later. It seemed that it would be too difficult to engage in it while in so much pain.”

Now read what he says later on in his article:

“Conversely I have many patients over the years have a successful surgery for a severe structural problem with no improvement or worsening of their pain. Now I understand. “Neurons that fire together wire together.” Pain, anxiety, and anger are tightly intertwined. As long as the anxiety/anger pathways are fired up they will keep the pain circuits firing.

Surgery may or may not help your arm or leg pain. It rarely solves neck or back pain. It really doesn’t work for anxiety. What relief are you asking your surgeon for?”

Dr. Hascom realized that his patients were coming in to deal with what were really emotional issues. His patients were going through stressful life events be it marital problems, a seriously ill child, loss of jobs, etc. As a result of these problems his patients were not getting much sleep. So he finally came to understand that the office visits were more about helping them to calm their anxiety, it being the underlying problem. He seems to have come to the similar conclusions as Dr. Sarno.

Interestingly enough, Dr. Hascom takes it one step further realizing that the anxiety was more problematic to his patients than the chronic pain they had originally come to him to have removed surgically. He found the out by asking them if they would be okay with their anxiety continuing to progress over the next 30 to 40 years, yet be pain free. They all said that they would not be able to live like that. When his patients realized that getting rid of the pain would not get rid of their anxiety the patients no longer were as interested in having the surgery. Dr. Hascom has a special program that he uses called the DOSS system which helps his patients to let go of the anxiety and with it the pain releases as well.

Dr. Magdalena Naylor, a neuro-science researcher and psychiatrist has been conducting research on her chronic pain patients over the past thirteen years. She has found that for the patients that have completed her 11 week program of cognitive behavioral therapy including the use some of hypnosis, the gray matter and white matter of her patients’ brains has doubled in size. This is a physiological change in the brain due to “talk therapy” as she puts it. She has concluded that pain medications are of no real help regardless of what the patient may say simply because the body’s tolerance level has gotten so high, that the drugs have no effect on the pain. The patients like to think it does, however it does not. This is a conclusion Dr. Naylor has come to after studying this subject for over thirteen years.

I have certainly found this notion of being angry and/or full of anxiety to be a provoker of chronic pain in my clients. The way we deal with it here is to deal with whatever is causing the anger or anxiety through hypnotic means. Many times the client has some broad understanding that there may be some emotional connection to the chronic pain because neither conventional or complimentary medicine has worked for them. Most often for my clients it is all about setting really clear boundaries with the stronger personalities that my clients have a hard time contending with, yet feel they must because it is a family member that is involved.

So, the question remains for those of you who are still suffering with chronic pain: Are you feeling something physical that is being created by something emotional? If so, perhaps you better revisit how you go about getting treatment for it.

When Will Marketers Stop Screwing With Self-Conscious Teens Body Images? – Vol. 133, Jan. 5, 2011

Katie Kindlan wrote on the December 6, 2011 ABC News Blog of the “picture perfect” computer generated models that the huge clothing retailer H&M is using on their website to sell their swimming suit and lingerie online. They claim that doing this allows the garments to be the main focus of their shopper’s experience.

I find this absolutely regrettable as many who have chimed in against the company for using this technique once again leading young woman to believe that the bikini perfect body is what they need to live up to for them to feel good about their bodies.

The feedback however from many who posted comments in response to the article had an interesting take on the situation. Many spoke of the use of virtual models as a step in the right direction because models would no longer have to starve themselves to look the way they do. Another commenter mentioned that the figures didn’t have the curves of a human woman so it would be difficult to confuse them with an image of a real woman.

From my own perspective working with young women who have been facing the ordeal of eating disorders, feeling that the less of them there is, the better it is, these pictures are distressing. My clients began their road to eating disorders feeling that they were a bit over weight. The illness came into being as the idea of losing ever more weight became the mantra playing in their minds, telling them they didn’t have a right to be alive or be happy in the case of the anorexics. This as they slowly went about extinguishing themselves from life. For the bulimics they too wondered if they were good enough people to be on the planet their negative minds continuously telling them that they were no good and didn’t deserve to be happy.

For most people these computer generated pictures of bikini clad women without the normal body fat that a healthy woman would carry, wouldn’t matter. It would be wonderful if we could live in a world where honesty in the images shown were of a normal bodily form. As reported in the September 16, 2006 time.com article, “Models Get The Skinny on Weight Limit” the country of Spain made it illegal for models to fall below a body mass index of 18 to take part in that country’s most important fashion event, Pasarela Cibeles. The government of Spain made it clear that they were making it a priority to take a stand for health for the citizens of their country. Wouldn’t it be great if the rest of the world would have followed along?

Maybe the H&M folks will do as they say and become clear in their future marketing messages that their images are not even of human beings, though it still won’t take care of those young minds who are looking to emulate the “picture perfect” body.

If you are anyone you know is battling eating disorders the first thing that needs to be known is that they are not malnourished. This is done with a medical exam. Once that is cleared I would suggest they get themselves the assistance they need to turn around their thinking from that of being “unworthy” and “unlovable” to one that is solidly grounded in realizing their own special attributes through true feelings of self-love and self-worth. Hypnotism is a great way to go to do this because it involves the reframing of the unconscious mind where all the negative thoughts that are directing the destructive behaviors live. If you choose to use a hypnotist please make sure that the practitioner has a very solid knowledge of working with this issue with proven results given both the complex nature of these illnesses as well as the severity of the condition.

So How Does Someone Become a Healthy 83 or 93 Year Old? – Vol. 233, Jan. 9, 2013

Anyone who personally knows me, knows that one of the places that I love to hang out is the whirlpool, any whirlpool that is hot enough with lovely massaging bubbles to be enjoyed. I especially love being in whirlpools where interesting people can be found to learn about their lives.

So, I was in the whirlpool of my health club when an older man got into the whirlpool and said “hi” to me. He looked healthy though a bit thin. His mind was as sharp as could be, so I asked him his secret to being so healthy. This is what he said:

  1. “Exercise every day. I exercise for at least a half hour a day here at the health club making sure to get in my cardio on the treadmill. Then I come to relax in the whirlpool. Sometimes I swim, but I always make time in the morning to come over here. I like being able to have a body that is able to do the things that I want it to do.”
  2. “I meditate every day for 15 to 20 minutes in the morning and then in the evening. It helps me to stay centered and living with a sense of calm.”
  3. “You, know attitude has a lot to do with it. I have a brother who is alway so negative and he isn’t doing so well. Me, I appreciate everything I have and can do and find that makes all the difference, the attitude.”

A few months ago, I met a very elegant woman in the whirlpool. She was already sitting there enjoying the bubbles when I arrived. I noted that she looked to be at least in her 80’s given the shear skin of her face. When I asked her, her age, she said she was 93 years old. I complimented her on her bright cheery attitude because she was sitting there smiling and enjoying herself. I asked her what she did to stay healthy and happy and she told me:

  1. “I get my exercise in at least 5 times a week.”
  2. “I was a musician my entire life, play the piano and viola and as long as I can do that I am happy.”
  3. “ I have a loving and supportive family. My daughter helps me come over here to get my exercise in and sometimes surprises me with a nice snack when she picks me up.”

I didn’t know this till her daughter came to get her a bit later because of the bubbles in the whirlpool. This women’s left leg was amputated right above the knee. One would never know that there was a thing wrong with her with her fabulous attitude and love of life.

So, we young ones have much to learn from the older set. Stop your complaining, do those things that we all know will help our bodies to do the best they can do for us. Notice neither of them said a thing about the food they ate which was interesting. Allow yourself to be in a peaceful state of mind surrounded by those who love you. Because when we do these things, well we find we have a much better attitude about life.

Now, for the record, I could eat better than I do having a bit of a sweet tooth and enjoying chocolate and baked goods. However, I do make sure that I eat many veggies – when cooked correctly they are very tasty and crunchy. I love my salads as well which are always made with fruits and oil and balsamic vinegar (or lemon) with nuts and all sorts of interesting things to enjoy in them – they are a whole meal in themselves. And again for anyone who knows me, a very large water bottle is always in my hand. Drinking plenty of water will keep you hydrated and in a positive mood.

I don’t particularly like working out finding it boring, though I do many stretching and strength exercises in the whirlpool with the water weights at the health club. If I can force myself I will do some floor exercises and push some weights on the machines. i Being self-employed, spending multitudes of hours alone at home at work, getting to the whirlpool meeting cool people is a highlight of my day. I never know what I may learn there. Just a few weeks ago I met a gentleman in the whirlpool who is known as the Sax Doc, since he cleans and fixes all sorts of horns for all the major orchestras here in metro-Boston as well as the likes of stars such as Ray Charles. He’s been working at the same music store doing this work for the past 40 years – he had some interesting stories to share about he musical stars he’s worked with over his career.

Given the above learnings from those with quite a bit more wisdom than I, being a mere “youth’ in their eyes, go ahead and take the advise given. It worked for them and can work for you. There was nothing that was difficult and nothing that was dogmatic in the advice given – all of it is easy to integrate into your life. The end result: a long happy, healthy, fulfilled life. What could be better than that?

Michael Jackson’s Private Doctor Convicted On Jackon’s Over Dose – Vol. 132, December 29, 2011

Apparently Michael Jackson was spending almost £100,000 month on prescriptions he was getting from his private physician, Dr. Conrad Murray. Apparently the doctor added insult to injury first by using an anesthetic, propofol to induce sleep in Jackson, when this is to be used only by anaethetist in a hospital setting. Secondly, Dr. Murray waited for almost a half an hour after finding Jackson before calling emergency services, neglecting to tell them about the use of propofol. This reported in the December 6, 2011 edition of the Daily Mirror by Miriam Stoppard.

We know that Jackson is one of many well monied stars who has died from a drug over dose prescribed by a private physician. The scary thing here is according to the newest data 7 million people in the United States admit to using prescription drugs for non-medical purposes. Of that number 40 people die from it every day. Many use pill mills (clinics that prescribe inappropriately,  through the internet where the dispensing agency has no idea of the situation that this person may be in not having any direct contact with them, or through doctor shopping (getting prescriptions from more than one doctor without telling each about the other).

It is understandable that sometimes doctors feel they need to make out the prescriptions for patients that will not take “no” for an answer. However, what the public needs to understand is that many of these same prescriptions are very dangerous especially when taken together.

There is also the problem of being given addictive medicine that may not seem to be a problem in the beginning. However, oh so subtly the helpful medication becomes an addictive habit that winds it way out of control.

If you are taking any sort of prescription be sure to understand why it is being prescribed and all of the side effects most importantly how addictive it can be. Use you intelligence where this is concerned because it could very well become a life or death situation whether or not you believe you are in control of your actions.

If you are finding yourself addicted to medication the first thing you need to do is have a medical professional get you through the detoxification process because this too can not only be very a scary situation to go through, it also has the chance of creating long lasting harm to you if not done appropriately.

Second, if you are finding yourself still dealing with the urges of wanting the drugs, it is a wise choice to add a hypnotist to your treatment team. With hypnosis you subconscious mind can be trained how to say “no” allowing you to let go of the urges and no longer desire the drugs. Further you will learn better ways to deal with the underlying issues that lead to the drug abuse above and beyond the initial prescription that brought you there.

If you choose to employ hypnosis do make sure that the hypnotist that you are working with has experience in dealing with drug addiction with an underlying understanding of psychology and the medical issues that can come with addiction. This is an area of work that requires a knowledgable person with whom to work to gain control of your mind and your life.

John Gray Interview Part 4 of Claim Your Excellent Life Podcast

Suzanne_with_John_Gray_P1010002-300x2251John Gray Interview Part 4 of Claim Your Excellent Life Podcast -Vol. 232, Jan. 2, 2014

In Part 4 of John’s interview he covered much material on how the brain loses function when we introduce drugs, sugars and malnourishing food into our bodies because it creates free radicals. The free radicals cause our brains to be inflamed which then creates the mental illnesses that so many people are suffering from these days. Lithium Orotate, Calcium Orotate and other minerals are what we need to heal our brains.

I had John tell us his age, which is 62 years young, given his great energy and enthusiasm for life. He made it clear that one needs to fulfill one’s purpose. In his case this is to educate the masses on how to heal themselves. He stated that anti-oxidants are what we are always told we need to have to heal our free radical situation, though glutathione will help us to recycle the vitamin C we require since we have to consume it, unable to produce it on our own.

Further into the interview John spoke about the great sex life he enjoys acknowledging that our sex drive is part of our reptilian brain, the oldest part of our brain. As reptiles are able to regenerate their tails, when we have sex, we regenerate our own energy sources. For those who have chosen to believe that they no longer need sexual activity, John states that they have cut themselves off from the most natural way to regenerate their energy stores.

Lastly he spoke more in depth of the use of hypnosis and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) since that is indeed my modality of healing both for myself and for my clients. He expressed how the use of the hypnosis and NLP allow one to have an objective look at their thoughts allowing them to heal. He uses it in his practice finding it most helpful for his clients along with great nutrition, having healthy relationships and helping others to find fulfillment.

After hearing John teach at Harvard, I knew I had to have him share is work with my audience. He absolutely blew me away with the amount of content he shared for “ our podcast Claim Your Excellent Life for what amounted to an hour interview which we split into 15 minute segments.

If you are in a relationship that isn’t serving you, he has a great book to help you to better understand how to deal with creating a better one called  Why Mars & Venuse Collide.

If you are having issues of focus you can go to his website and download his new book on focus for free at: www.marsvenus.com.

If you are a person who is sick of being told to take what accounts to deadly medications to help deal with your symptoms, never getting to the cure – I would have to say that John and I agree – that medicine is missing the mark by leaving out the most obvious of notions that we are indeed naturally healing beings if we only had the basic components necessary to do so. Instead we find ourselves eating nutrient lacking food, told to take medications as if they were candy even if they create more problems than they solve, and are never told that if we would: just love and be loved, listen to our inner wisdom and do what feels right for us, maybe, just maybe the citizens of this country would be a whole lot healthier and definitely much happier and fulfilled.

Folks, this isn’t rocket science. If you are stressed out, deal with it by reducing it no matter what you need to do. If you are in a job you hate, get out of it and find one where you are respected while doing work that you like enough to do each day. If you are constantly worried, angry, jealous, obsessive, sad or feeling guilty you best deal with it or you will find yourself getting sicker and sicker. I know that some of my newer clients have chronic pain issues which have nothing whatsoever to do with muscles and ligaments – it has to do with what Dr. John Sorano has determined to be stuck emotions of anger and anxiety – because the oxygen is unable to get to these areas of the body, creating real physical pain for those that just won’t deal with the emotions that need to be healed.

Please care enough about yourself to get the help that you deserve. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for those who love you and want to have a happy, healthy, fulfilled human being to share life with.

Here are some videos from John’s vast library of videos that you will find helpful:
