Holiday Blahs – Vol. 95, December 2010

Vol. 95, December 2010 – Holiday Blahs

During the holidays many people go through a difficult time. When people are depressed they find the regular activities of life to be daunting enough. However, when the holidays are upon us with the increased expectations like the buying gifts, preparing meals, the many social invitations and the impact of perhaps having to spend time with family members with who you have strained relations. This while being expected to be happy, while inside you are not feeling happy at all is enough to overwhelm anyone.

First accept the feelings that you have, for they are what they are. If you are feeling all alone reach out to others who may be in a similar situation. Maybe you could spend the holiday doing things that you enjoy any way.

Buy gifts for those people that matter while setting a reasonable budget to alleviate any bad feelings of overspending after the holiday season is over.

You can ask others to help in the preparation of meals either by bringing a favorite dish to lighten the cooking you need to do, or even suggest that someone else take over the cooking this year. There is no need to feel compelled to do as you have always done if it feels like too much for you to handle.

If there are strained relations within your family realize that it is up to you to decide if you wish to spend the time with them, or perhaps would rather spend your holidays with someone else. It may also be possible to suggest eating the meal out limiting the amount of time that you will need to be with the family.

If you no longer have family with whom to share the holidays, feelings of being all alone in the world may come up during this season. There are things that you can do to help to contend with these feelings. First, you may be able to get together with a friend of yours who also may be going through a difficult time because their family is either far away, or gone. Perhaps you could add a bit of the holiday spirit volunteering working to help the needy while improving your mood in the spirit of helping others. It is amazing how much better we can feel by bringing some much needed light to another in being of service.

If you are feeling over scheduled and stressed out it is okay to decline those invitations that you would rather not accept. Just tell the host that you have conflicting plans and that things will be different for you next year.

Most of all, if you are feeling very depressed and unable to do much of anything and nothing feels right to you, please get yourself some additional help as depression is a progressive illness that if left alone for too long can bring you down to depths that you may not be able to recover on by yourself. You can tell if this is happening if you have lost interest in the things that once interested you, isolating away from others maybe spending much more time in your bed than you previously did. If you are finding yourself either eating more or much less than you normally do coupled with feelings of sadness you would be wise to talk to a professional to deal with these feelings before they get out of hand.

Hypnosis can be a good way to go if you realize that you have been under much stress, have feelings of being overwhelmed and are unable to use the word “no” when it would serve you better to do so. To find a hypnotist who can help you with your depression go on their website and read the testimonials of people that have had this issue successfully resolved through their care. Second give them a call to see if you feel you trust them with this problem and third make sure that they understand the gravity of the situation you are in. In other words, listen to hear what they can do for you versus when a medical intervention is needed.
