“Heads Together” campaign: The Royals Take A Stand to Destimatize Mental Illness

“Heads Together” campaign: The Royals Take A Stand to Destimatize Mental Illness – Vol. 416, June 1, 2017

Nearly 20 years ago Prince William and Prince Harry lost their mom. Harry admitted that he ignored his own emotional distress for years. He noted that having counseling was very helpful. William’s focus was on the male suicide statistics. In 2013 75% of suicide deaths were by males, usually by hanging, strangulation or suffocation. Suicide is the leading cause of death for woman aged 20-34 in England and Wales.

Men are more at risk of suicide given their propensity to drink heavily, reluctant to seek help, using fatal methods to self-harm. Unfortunately, this was the first year that hanging, strangulation and suffocation were the most common methods used by woman. This information comes from the Office for National Statistics in the United Kingdom.

Apparently British Children have become much more competitive and less forgiving. Rising household indebtedness has created stressful homes due to financial stress parents are under. This has brought on anxiety and depression in their children.

It was through their work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities and veterans that the Royal Highnesses have seen first hand the social challenges that mental illness have caused. Virgin Money London Marathon is making Heads Together their 2017 Charity of the Year.

Maybe some of this great work of the Royal Highnesses and Virgin Money London will spread across the globe to enlighten the greater public to get the help necessary to combat mental illness, by destigmatizing it. I for one a very grateful to see this movement headed by such people of note!
