Vol. 86 March 2010 – Pop a Pill or The Alternative Medicine: Hypnosis

I am not sure if there are more pills to cure disease or if there are more actual diseases in the world at this point. One thing is for certain, all of us at one time or another has taken some type of pill for some sort of symptom. We don’t even have to have an actual disease or illness, merely a symptom to reach for that little pill bottle. We take pills when our head hurts, when we can’t sleep, and we feel nauseous. There are not just aspirins now, but aspirins for backache, headache, arthritis, migraine, joint pain, muscle aches and the list goes on. We even take pills to get ourselves to do what we want to do but are just unable to like: losing weight, quitting smoking, or sexual compulsiveness.  We take pills when we have low energy or if we are too hyper. We even take fertility pills if we want to get pregnant or sexual enhancement pills for better sex. We take pills to control our OCD or any other undesirable condition that we may suffer from. The list is endless and I will bet for any symptom, there is a pill somewhere to make it better. And it makes sense to us for why suffer through life if we do not have to with all these annoyances.

All of these methods of “fixing” ourselves are legal and accepted in our society today. We don’t think twice to reach for an aspirin if we have a headache or a sleeping pill if we cannot sleep. Do we ever wonder why we are getting that headache or if there could be a reason behind the constant stomach pains or need for internet porn? We don’t think twice of giving our child a pill for that ADD or learning disability he or she might have. In fact  we feel we are helping our child to do and perform better by giving him or her a pill to overcome their “disability” or inadequacy.

Do we ever stop to think what that little pill might be doing to our bodies and our minds? Our minds start to learn to rely on these “helpful” synthetic chemicals, such that we know if we get a headache, relief is just a pill away. Or if our stomach gives us agita, relief is just a plop, plop or fizz away. But is this how we really want to go through life, with synthetic man made chemicals to correct for life’s twists and turns. Our bodies become a vast wasteland when we think of how old we will live in relation to how many grams of chemicals we toss into our bodies and that excludes all the chemicals we ingest from food processing and other means of pollution on a daily basis. It is very rare that any of us in this polluted and fast paced hectic world today does not suffer from some sort of “aliment” be it high blood pressure or headaches. The list is just too long to even think of. And even if we don’t suffer from any particular symptom, we  take something to prevent getting the symptom in the first place such as pills to boost our immune system.

Would it not be better if we could allow our minds to help in controlling our bodies?  Would it not be better to allow our minds to heal our bodies naturally? This can be done through hypnosis. Through the art of hypnosis one can stop smoking, learn to relax enough that they no longer need a pill to wind down, or help get them to a better state of mind to have more energy without having to take that stimulant, to be able to focus more or eat less. Whatever the desired result, hypnosis can assist your mind in allowing your body to do what you want and desire for it to do naturally.
The Physicians Desk Reference is a huge book, and it contains hundreds of pills, drugs and medicines all designed to make our lives better. I question the fact that these drugs always improve our health. In many cases, they are needed.  In many cases maybe they do improve our health. In all too many cases, not only are they not needed, but there is an alternative that is not as easily reached for in our society because it is not as advertised or drummed into our minds as much or as easily as reaching for that pill.

Hypnosis is thought of as an alternative medicine. Alternative medicines are not always thought of as our first line of defense when we have a health issue. You will not find hypnosis in CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid. We tend to automatically reach for the easy and quick fix, that pill. Wouldn’t it be better to get rid of the underlying cause of the symptom be it a simple headache to insomnia. If these symptoms and ailments are chronic and bothersome on a regular basis, and if you have just had enough of treating the symptom and want to treat the cause to prevent the symptom, perhaps hypnosis is a possible alternative to simply popping that pill.

Hypnosis can help you conquer just about anything that you might want to take a pill for, and there are no side effects. Taking one pill for one symptom sometimes causes another separate symptom for which you take another pill. With hypnosis, there are no side effects, and you will deal with the issue at hand not creating any others in the process. You will overcome what it is that ails you from sexual compulsiveness to drug addiction to insomnia without creating any other issues in the process. Taking too many aspirins can cause an ulcer. Isn’t it better to deal with the headache, before you get that ulcer? Isn’t it better to allow our bodies own natural chemicals to do the healing? Our bodies have the natural ability to produce the chemicals we need to live the comfortable lives we want, we just have to know how to access them, not to be found in a bottle or in CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid.

Note: Hypnosis for medical issues is to be used in conjunction with your medical professional. Referrals from medical professionals are required under the law of most the states in the United States and many other countries for your own safety.

Vol. 77 June 2009- Healing Starts in Your Mind

Anyone who has taken medication and felt better almost immediately realizes that this result most likely was too soon to be caused by the medication. This effect is known in the medical field as the “placebo effect”. Doctors are taught that 30% of the people who are treated with placebos will show signs of improvement. However they are also taught that this improvement is subjective and temporary because the illness will continue to take its course.

In 1993 a study was published in Clinical Psychology Review proving that 70% of the time placebos were effective in treating Herpes, stomach ulcers and angina pectoris. Placebos have also been noted to reduce cancerous tumors as well as regenerating the immune cells of AIDS patients.

Pharmacologist Candace Pert, author of Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine was able to demonstrate that neuropeptides which transmit the messages in the brain’s neurons influence the behavior of almost all the body’s cells proving that our mind is actually located through out our body, not just in the brain.

The placebo effect accounts for everything that we do not yet know about the body, explaining the healing of shamans, and other healers, such as hypnotists. Scientific medicine has replaced this ancient knowledge with the mechanics of how the body works, never taking into the account the patient’s spiritual aspect. If you are requiring medical interventions do yourself a favor by locating a doctor that is willing to consider every part of you: body, mind and spirit in the healing process, willing to work with complementary medical professionals in order to offer the most well rounded care you can receive. It will definitely shorten the length of the illness while allowing you to have more control over your healing process creating the best results for you.

When you are seeking a hypnotist to work with the medical professionals make sure that they have appropriate certification by one or more of the professional associations for hypnotists. Check out their website to note if they have any testimonials from past clients that have had a similar situation to yours and that they were able to effectively work with your issue. It would also be a great idea to interview them to make sure that you feel comfortable with them before making an appointment to work with them.

One other very important thing that you may not realize is that one need not have a medical license to do hypnotism. Hypnotism is a separate profession from psychology, psychiatry and the medical profession requiring knowledge about how one needs to speak to the unconscious mind. You would be best served to work with someone who is competent as a hypnotist is working in the field full-time as true professionals are dedicated to constantly learning their craft by actually practicing and continuously upgrading their education as new and better techniques come along. If you are really lucky you may find someone who has truly added to the field based on the work that they have been doing in their practices.

Certainly for any medical intervention you always need to get a referral from your doctor before seeing the hypnotist to make sure that they are both working in concert on your behalf. Any hypnotist who is willing to work with you on a medical basis without a referral is someone with whom you should stay away from. The reason for this is two fold. First it is against the law in the state of Massachusetts and many other states to work with a patient when they are presently working with a licensed professional. Second, there are many tests and much knowledge the doctor has that a hypnotist would never have which needs to be taken under consideration when ever you are under going a medical treatment of any sort. The doctors are able to use scanning equipment like MRIs, Pet Scans and x-rays along with blood test to find out what is wrong with you. Once the doctor knows what is wrong with you, or has ruled out the obvious problems, maybe finding out that the issue is of the mind, instead of the body, then it is time to work with a hypnotist to work in conjunction with your doctor.

When one is using hypnosis for pain control, it is doubly important to have a medical referral for the pain is there to make you aware that there is a problem. It is up to the doctor to diagnose what the problem is and that what ever can be done medically is being done. Only after that has been done do you go to a hypnotist to have the pain relieved. You wouldn’t want to have a horrible situation happen because the hypnotist relieved you of a pain that could be indicating a very serious or even life threatening event, would you? So be aware of the treatments that are available and use your best judgment to take care of your issues in a manner that will get you back to health with all the professionals on board with consistent care with your interest at the heart of that care.

Vol. 76, May 2009 – Whose life are you living?

Are you feeling stressed with less energy than normal and perhaps feeling that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach? It almost feels as if you know that you need to do something, but you are not sure exactly what and everything else that you have been doing up till now hasn’t helped to alleviate any of these unwanted feelings that you have in your body.

If you fit this description at all it is probably because when you take the time to think about it there are too many demands on your time and money because too many people want something from you. It doesn’t really matter what, the fact is that you are tired, sick of spending money on things you may not need or want and just have a desire to be free of all of it. Perhaps you are soothing yourself by drinking to much alcohol, spending too many hours at the office because home is worse than work in your mind, or maybe you are spending money you don’t have for things that you know you don’t need… but it feels better to shop, doesn’t it? Maybe you are eating too much and even worse you are eating junk food, even though you know it makes you feel worse doing so, or maybe even perhaps you have decided to go get massages to relax you- it was innocent in the beginning, but now you are being “pleasured” by the lovely “massage therapist” and though it feels good in the moment you feel badly about yourself after the fact….but you can’t help yourself, because nothing else makes the negative feelings go away…but you know that it is only a temporary fix, and yet a temporary fix is better than no fix at all because you think you are losing your mind.

When most people feel this way they will go see are mental health professional who in most cases will write a prescription for some medication to help deal with the negative thoughts and behaviors. While this can help in some cases, it is not a cure. Just ask the folks who have been on medication for years that do in many cases feel better and yet if they were to stop their medications would most likely have their symptoms return.

The other problem that I personally have with medication as the cure-all of our 21st century manner of treatment would be the long term effects of the medication on the patient who is ingesting it. Keep in mind that your body has to detoxify the medication either through your liver or kidneys depending on the type of medication that is being used. Over the many years that most patients are kept on these very strong medications, damage to these life giving organs can and does happen. I had it happen in my own case with long term use of lithium for mood disorders and though the medication did its job, I found after over ten years of use it was starting to slow down my kidney function. This became apparent in the deforming of my thumb nails which were telling me that something was not right in my body. After 24 hour urine collection, it was discovered that my kidney function was not operating at the normal levels. In my case it was caught before permanent damage occurred. However, one always has to ask themselves if the treatment is worth the possible harm. In my case the lithium was a potential life saver, for most of the time I was taking it. My situation changed drastically when I learned how to do NLP and how to apply it to myself to conquer the bipolar for which the lithium was prescribed. Of course this was a shock to my long term psychiatrist when she noticed after 10 months of seeing her without being on medication of any sort, that indeed my bipolar was no longer in evidence. Everything was fine and that bipolar did not need to be what she was taught in her psychiatric training to be a “life long illness”. Since March 12, 2004 I have not been on any medication for my bipolar and since January 5, 2005 I have not needed to be under psychiatric care. Yes, medications do indeed have their place, and that place is necessary in far fewer situations than or allopathic world of today is willing to believe.

After working in the hypnotic arts for over seven years now, I can tell you that the reason that most people get ill has more to do with how you allow others to control you, than anything else. It is amazing that this idea is very rarely ever spoken of in the psychological literature. The specialist seem to believe a pill of some sort or cognitive behavioral therapy is the answer to most anything. I am here to give you a much more practical outlook on this whole situation.

The fact of the matter is that you are not “losing your mind” and there are reasons for acting and thinking and feeling in the way that you are currently. To make this very simple it is because you are allowing others to run your life for you. Yeah, we all want to get along with people and have friends and not have our significant others or our kids drive us nuts, or worse our parents and yet most times it seems to be easier to either ignore the problem or do something that will sedate us for a while to just get a break from it all.

The reason you find yourself in this situation is that your unconscious mind “runs” you whether or not you are aware of it and this is what makes it so difficult to stop doing the things that you want to stop and to do the things that you want to do. My guess is that if you were able to do the things the way you wanted you wouldn’t need to be reading this article. With that in mind do understand that the only way to reprogram your unconscious mind to receive the results you desire is to work inside the unconscious mind. This is what hypnotists and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) practitioners assist their clients to do. It really doesn’t matter what the effect is, it is the “cause” that matters. In my experience in this field it always goes back to having your “boundaries” being over ridden by someone in your world, either when you were young or later on in life, perhaps some love interest cheating on you. The way to “STOP” your boundaries from being over ridden is to “STOP” allowing the people in your life to over ride them.

Now, that may sound easy enough to do, however do realize that most people with significant problems be they emotional or physical (as in having an illness) are allowing their boundaries to be over ridden ALL THE TIME and the way that you know this is because every time you have an interaction with someone and it results in your feeling something negative either emotionally like feeling anger, quilt or hurt or physically (in this case do see a physician to rule out physiological issues or to learn about what needs to be treated with the hypnotic work) because your body is letting you know in a different way that something is not working for you, your boundaries have been over ridden.

The good news is that there is a way to stop this unpleasant cycle of behavior, no matter what form or forms that it takes for you. That way is TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR OWN LIFE BACK in a manner that is workable for everyone involved. It isn’t that complicated really; however there are more humane and ethical ways of doing this than most of us would be able to figure out on our own.

Using the power of you unconscious mind to first of all understand why it is that you are allowing yourself to feel miserable and then relearning that you are worthy because of the magnificent person you really are. Once you have regained a sense of self, you can indeed learn how to enforce the boundaries that help you feel safe and respected. In most cases
it will be quick and easy to reclaim your life your happiness and sense of fulfillment.
Here is what Laura in Boston, Mass. had to say about our work together:

Prior to working with Suzanne I found myself binging at night, half
asleep unable to control my behavior. In fact, I felt that way about
most of my life – as if there were a part which was continuously
sabotaging my efforts. I had many types of therapists over the years,
some of whom were reasonably helpful, but even combined they were
nothing compared to Suzanne. The fact that I am no longer night-eating
or overeating, and the fact that I am no longer so angry and stifled, are
merely examples of my new reality: I’m on my way to being truly free.
Suzanne was able to clear all the causes of my problems in a few weeks.
I had no idea the results would be this phenomenal.”

You may have a different presenting problem than Laura’s, however, if anger, depression, anxiety, self-loathing are any part of how you feel currently, you too can be freed of these negative feelings, usually in one weekend of intensive work up to around a month later if you were to work with me. This really depends on how quickly you personally integrate the changes. Please note that If you have a lot of weight to lose (more than 30 pounds) or have medical issues that complicate your case, it will take longer to receive your results, however, you will FEEL MUCH BETTER on your way to reaching your goal, and that means you will have given yourself a MUCH BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE and don’t you deserve that much?

Do understand that if you are looking for a competent person to help you with these issues I would suggest that you find someone who is a Master Practitioner of NLP and Time Line Therapy ™ if at all possible because these techniques allow for much quicker results than straight suggestive hypnosis. You can contact the American Board of NLP or The Time Line Therapy ™ to get a referral to someone who practices almost anywhere in the world. You can find them through contacting the Tad James Company, Inc. Just google them on the internet or call: 888-440-4823 and they will be happy to connect you to the boards for a referral to a competent practitioner in your area.

Hypnosis and NLP have managed to turn my whole life around and know that it can do the same for you so long as you are willing to make the investment in yourself that will be required to do the work.

Vol. 31 August 2005 – Pain Release Utilizing Hypnosis Works Well!

Pain is expressed in various ways: aching, throbbing, stabbing, burning, radiating and stinging. Pain is experienced differently because it is subjective and influenced by age, gender, and psychosocial factors.

There are two basic types of physical pain: chronic and acute. Acute pain is a result of injury, disease or inflammation. It is usually of short duration, easily diagnosed and treated in most cases. Continue »

Vol. 27, April 2005 – What Does It Mean When a Child Complains of a Tummy Ache?

While I was reading a little tiny piece in Time Magazine under the headline “Do Parents Push For The Right Treatment?” (April 4, 2005), this immediately caught my attention: “children whose parents went from specialist to specialist, but balked at considering that emotional issues might be the culprit, have a 3-in-10 recovery rate. Of families that accepted a referral to child-psychological services, 11 of 13 saw improvements.” The basic deal here is that emotional issues are at cause more times than parents would like to deal with. Vol. 26, March 2005 – There is a Better Way to Deal with Pain Control than Medication

For anyone who is experiencing painful illnesses such as headaches, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, muscle or joint injury, irritable bowel syndrome, neuropathy and pain from accidents, having the doctor write out a prescription and hoping for the best is the usual treatment. Unfortunately many patients end up building tolerances to these medications, making them less effective over a long period of time. Continue »

Vol. 24, January 2005 – Surgery Anyone?

A few years ago I had to undergo surgery–not once but twice. It would have been great to have known that hypnosis would have been wonderful for this purpose. I could have felt more relaxed and in control, knowing that my surgical team was doing their best to keep me safe while they did a splendid job reducing my anxiety. I could have healed quicker and had many more positive effects. Continue »

Suzanne helped me get through one of the most difficult experiences of my life. I had endometriosis, a condition which can cause extreme abdominal pain in women. My symptoms came to a peak one day in September 2004; the pain was so bad, I could hardly walk. I could not sit, stand or curl up comfortably. The pain was so bad I was on the verge of vomiting from it. Continue »

My initial purpose in going to Suzanne was not weight loss, but I lost 44 pounds!
I went to Suzanne because I had been bedridden with chronic pain for about 5 years and had ballooned from a healthy 135 pounds to 179! I had no energy and could not exercise. Also, I was basically rewarding myself for having pain by eating…which I did not realize until I was hypnotized. Continue »

Suzanne’s pre and post- operative tapes completely changed my surgical experience. I had been in critical, chronic pain for years and was now scheduled for a major operation. I was placing my life on the outcome of this operation so much that I was scheduled to recuperate in the secure mental ward, due to real fears by my doctors that I might commit suicide if the outcome of the operation was not positive.
