Challenging Circumstances in Challenging Times: How Do You Deal With Them? – Vol. 242, March 13, 2014 –

As we all know life can throw us some curve balls. What do you do when the life that you know it is no longer the way that you are living? It so happened I just had this very conversation with a very close friend of mine today.

For many years my friend was doing work that paid well when she could get it. You see she is a contractor that does project management pretty much wherever she is hired around the world to do it. She is also a trained hypnotist with the understanding of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). Over the years she has worked hard to integrate her understanding of NLP into her work in her contract jobs and in her interactions with her family and friends gaining very positive results. With the economy being so poor over the past few years she found herself out of work for two years. The financial situation that she and her family found themselves in was terrible as a result of her lack of work.

My friend ended up taking the only job she could find with paid training in her area – a very rural area in the high desert of Nevada. That job was selling very high end vacuum cleaners door-to-door. She was only in the job for about four months, but learned how to “sell” as a result. She learned how to create rapport very quickly by looking around the home she was in and picking out things that she could talk about with her prospects. She used her neuro-linguistic skills to further the rapport finding herself closing some business, unlike many others who had started with her in the same sales position.

Now she has recruiters who are looking to hire her to do recruiting work, because this too is a sales job where one needs to be able to close business. So as my friend says, “I have opportunities that I never would have realized if I hadn’t taken a deep breath to do a job I most sincerely didn’t want, yet needed desperately at the time. This is because I learned how to close business without being nervous.”

She told me this story because I too am finding myself in a situation where I need to look at other opportunities. Business is slow and bills still need to be paid. Most importantly, we really never know what can become of that opportunity that we are forced to take because of our circumstances, possibly in the not too distant future.
